先日、東京でやっているミレー展をつきあいで見に行った。絵そのものは趣味じゃないんだけれど、ぼくがおもしろいと思ったのは、こうした絵画がかつて人気を博した理由のほうだった。ちょうど経済力をつけてきていた一般農民や市民たちが、自分たちの姿が描かれているのを見たがったからだ、という話だ。
